Bordeaux boasts an attractive eighteenth century old town, located between the river and the cathedral. Shoppers will delight as they make their way along the famous Rue Ste Catherine, said to be the longest shopping street in Europe. The coastal resort of Arcachon is particularly famous for the ‘Dune du Pilat’, the largest sand dune in Europe at a height of more than 110m. Aside from this, the town itself and the beaches have huge appeal to holidaymakers. Closer to the Spanish border are Biarritz, Bayonne and St Jean de Luz. Beautiful houses in picturesque towns and villages, the Basque region radiates a lively mix of French and Spanish cultures. Once thought of as the Monte-Carlo of the Atlantic coast, Biarritz is the capital of surfing and enjoys a lively atmosphere. Bayonne lies 6km inland from the coast and is of course the home of the famous Jambon (ham) de Bayonne, a delicious, air-dried ham. A further 20km south of Biarrtiz and Bayonne and closer to the border is St Jean de Luz, probably one of the most attractive resorts on the Basque coast.
