Famed for it's beautiful landscapes, Barra is the southern-most inhabited island in the Outer Hebrides, Barra is accessed by ferry, which departs from Oban and arrives at the main town of Castlebay. There is much to discover on Barra - a five minute boat trip from Castlebay will take you to the 'Castle in the Sea', medieval Kisimul Castle, which sits dramatically on a rock foundation rising out of the bay. The traditional seat of the Clan MacNeil, and offers stunning views of the island. Take a stroll along beautiful sandy beaches, and take in the scenery as you walk or cycle around this small, beautiful island. The more adventurous can try their hand at sea kayaking, on a guided tour from Castlebay, to explore the islands and sheltered bays. Barra is also known as the final resting place of the author Compton Mackenzie, who wrote "Whisky Galore", about the 1941 shipwreck of the SS Politician and subsequent salvage of 240,000 bottles of whisky by the islanders of neighbouring Eriskay, a story which was later turned into the classic Ealing comedy and "The Monarch of the Glen", on which the popular BBC television series from the early 2000s was based.
