Avignon is perhaps one of the most famous cities in Provence, if not France and was once the Papal capital. A splendidly preserved medieval city and still surrounded by the original walls, essential visits are the Palais des Papes (Pope’s Palace) and of course the Pont d’Avignon (Avignon Bridge). Located 25km north of Marseille is Aix-en-Provence, an attractive city with decorative streets. Perhaps one of the most visited places in Provence is the Verdon Gorge, Europe’s largest canyon and a must for anyone in the area. The canyon is at its most impressive between the towns of Castellane and Moustiers-Ste-Marie. Many visitors choose to drive around the top, a 130km drive with breathtaking views. Arles boasts a well-preserved Roman arena (Les Arènes), and is often the setting for tauromachie or bullfighting.
