The former wealth of Burgundy is evident across its towns, Dijon in particular and the great abbeys of Fontenay and Vézeley – a stunning hamlet perched on a hilltop and nearly all the towns and villages in the region boast a Romanesque church. The small but popular city of Nevers lies in western Burgundy and is best known for its hand-painted porcelain known as bleue de Nevers. The old town has much to offer and is a quieter alternative to the hustle of the city centre. Head south in Burgundy and you reach the winemaking areas of Mâcconnais and Beaujolais – a young wine drunk early and a tradition that is popular all over France when each new season comes around.
