The Chamonix ski area extends over 3 main areas - Bréven/Flégère, the Grand Montets and the Balme area. Les Houches lies at the opposite end of the valley.

Lower valley ski areas such as Les Planards and Le Savoy are great for beginners and are close to the centre of town.
